Since others reported the same problems with the CD door and remote, it looks like a design/engineering problem. Had the CD door not stopped working, I would've given the product a good rating. Another problem is that some operations (like changing equalizer mode) can only be done via remote. The remote stopped working a while ago (I suspect a drained battery, but since I use Harmony remote, I did not bother to change it). The sound quality is not best, but tolerable for a smaller room. I bought Philips MCM240/37 Micro Hi-Fi System because I liked the slick look, small size, and MP3 support. After about 3 years of very infrequent use, the CD door stopped working (it does not completely open, just moves up a bit and then moves down). Overall, I'm very displeased with the quality of the product.
Also, has the best performance for the price I paid. Sound quality is also good. This is really a cute piece of player. Very fashionable and easy to use.
This is so much easier to grasp than the bewildering array of buttons scattered around the sides, top and front of so many units today. Also, all the controls are buttons, round are retangular and slightly recessed to make for a very clean look. It has good bass, without distorting, but if you want something that will shake the wallls, this is not it. The sound quality is outstanding for a shelf system. The remote has good range, at least 20 feet.
AM sound is clear. This makes it convienient to use from either room with the very user friendly and thin remote. Classic, Pop, Jazz, Rock and maybe one more. An added bonus is a extra bass button and 4 or 5 pre-programmed equalizer modes. All buttons have a high quality and consistent feel. Makes for a very nice departure from the array of sliders, knobs, buttons, etc., found on many other units in this price range. I never really figured how to use her Sony shelf system. not sure that's the right term, but the stations do not overlap like they do on many inexpensive systems.
crystal and sparkling come to mind. I don't think you can beat it for under $100. Piano music sounds outstanding. We put it in the kitchen but with "line of sight" to the family room. My only wish is for a recessed handle on the back, or top, to make it easier to move with one hand. Have to use two hands to pick it up an move to another room.
The unit also comes with screws, mollys and a template to mount on the wall, if your prefer. Comes with decent FM and AM antennas and includes Aux and Headphone jacks. It looks really sleek and modern. One of the real benefits of this unit, is the ease of use. The sound is very clear. The FM tuner sounds particurally good and has good separation.
Very nice unit. I bought this for my wife to replace a Sony whose CD player stopped working. The Phillips has placed all the controls front and center and layed them out in three, logical groups. Presets are very nice and easy to use, along with the auto programming feature.
Its cheap so if he breaks it I won't vent as much :-).For any other purpose I would say this is an extremely under powered system. Takes very little space. I bought this for music in my toddlers room. For that purpose I think this is fine. Is easy to use.
I won't ever buy another Philips product. The replacement the company sent worked for two days. The first remote worked for about 8 months. So the unit works well and the sound is fine, but I I can't set the sleep, repeat, or shuffle funcitons. Here's another example of a product that has features available only on the remote control. Once the remote quits, you are out of luck. I'm awaiting the third replacement; it's been six weeks and I fully expect I won't ever receive one.
